PDBA Championship Race to be held...

Congratulations to all members of the San Diego Dragon Boat Club! In addition to the West Coast Championship this race will be the qualifier for the 2012 Hong Kong World Crew Club Championships so there will be even more interest from the region. This event will be held in conjunction with our second annual race sometime next October. The selection of our club as host and San Diego as the location was based in very large part on the success of the race we held a few weeks ago. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED MAKE THE EVENT THE SUCCESS THAT IT WAS! From the Race Committee team to everyone that helped out on the race weekend, every person’s contribution was part of the success. Thanks also to the committee members that helped pull our PDBA proposal together. For those of you that may not realize it, this is a milestone event for the San Diego Dragon Boat Club and for our community here in San Diego. One of the first dragon boat races in the U.S. was held here in San Diego in 1983, and we have now brought it back again after 27 years. We have almost a year to prepare for this event, and we will need lots of help to make it happen. Watch for information as it comes out during the next few months. Anyone that would like to become part of the committee or would like to help out is welcome! Please contact any member from this year’s committee if you have questions or suggestions or would like to get involved.

Thank you to all the amazing Dragon Boat Teams that stayed and played with us in San Diego on Saturday & Sunday. Some misty rain, soon became joyous rainbows and sunshine for a fabulous start to a great weekend of racing on the glassy waters of Mission Bay. Peaceful Monks blessed our boats and awakened the dragons with the mysterious eye-dotting ceremony. Local dignitaries congratulated our athletes' efforts and energy. While faraway teams from Seattle, Portland, Arizona, San Francisco, Los Angeles and even Colorado became competitive with lots of serious paddling, and cheering on the beach, just south of the Hilton Resort. College teams from USC, UCI, and UCSD let their energy loose from start to finish! Team Survivor from San Diego and the LA Pink Dragons exhibited their strength and spirit during a memorable moment honoring friends who have battled cancer so bravely. Corporate teams from Sanyo, SEO Consultants, Kaiser, Physical Plant Operators, DPW, Splashing Flyers, and Crime Fighters gained a renewed spirit of teamwork. A HUGE thank you (and well-deserved "Spirit Award") to LARD for lugging boats and all the volunteer students from UCSD for helping the race run so smoothly all weekend long. We even finished 45 minutes early... so our out of town teams had plenty of time and a beautiful sunset to enjoy San Diego's finest restaurants & attractions. Team Wasabi took over the "Tavern" for a perfectly casual Paddlers Party Saturday night. On Sunday, in the totally tippy & super speedy new 10-man races, Lanakila's strong Mixed and Open team won a $1,000 cash prize; while the sleek & powerful Kai Elua women won $500 for their racing day! Wow! Be sure to check out the race results for all our Championship races. They are posted under the Racing tab. We look forward to seeing the same teams and some new faces on the water in San Diego next year in 2011...Thank YOU all!

Super Saturday!

Dear Team leaders:
Here is some final information that you will need to know before we begin racing tomorrow:.
1.       Visiting teams that are driving in will drop off you supplies and equipment in the large south parking lot. This is the south of the Hilton and adjacent to the blue porta-potties. After drop off parking is first come first served. There is lots of additional parking on the street both north and south of the Hilton. If everything is full we have additional parking across Sea World Drive in the big dirt parking lot. On both mornings we will have volunteers directing traffic.
2.       The Captains/Team Leaders meeting will be at 7:30 on both days. It is MANDATORY that Steersmen attend. At that time we will pass out updated race grids and also verbally explain any last minute changes that occurred. We will also discuss race protocols and answer any questions.

3.       Races will be called to marshalling by RACE NUMBER, NOT TIME.   The times listed are just approximate.
4.       The first two races will be called for Marshalling right after the Captain’s meeting.
5.       At 8:45 we will halt the races for a half hour opening ceremony.   Congresswoman Susan Davis will welcome the teams and we will have a traditional blessing and eye dotting ceremony which will wrap up by 9:15. Please join us for this short celebration.

6.       We will also have an exhibition race by the San Diego Junior Canoe and Kayak program.

7.       That’s it! Have a great weekend racing. If you any questions during the day please visit our hospitality tent or ask any of the helpers wearing a San Diego Jersey. We will also have 1st year race t-shirts available for Sale throughout the day.

Dear Team Leaders;
We know that everyone is anxiously awaiting the draft race grid. Please be patient a little longer. We have been working on it for several days and are just ironing out the last kinks. We are trying our best to accomodate everyone's needs and finish in time for everyone to make it to the race party! Some other things that you should know:
We have had to move the start times up on on both days to approximately 8:00 or 8:15 AM depending on the day. That means that the Captains meeting on Saturday will be at 7:30. We will send a separat email with details for that. Marshaling for the first race will be just before 8:00. We have tentatively moved all Division I 20 man races to Saturday, along with Div II, College, and Corporate. The grid should be out later this evening or first thing tomorrow morning. Please also check the website for other updates- A site map will be up by tomorrow morning. Other items to consider for our race area (please pass along to your teams)- No glass allowed - No alcohol allowed in Mission Bay Park - No Dogs -You can bring BBQs and coolers - There is parking along West Mission Bay blvd, in the south parking lot, and we have overflow parking across Sea World Drive. There will be lots of general public walking by and stopping to watch. Although 99.9% of the spectators will have good intentions, it is a good idea to be mindful of your belongings. Finally, please be respectful of the local public and the other park rules so that we can maintain our permit for future races. Again, thank you for your patience, The Race Committee

Dear Participating Teams:
We are a week out from the race weekend and hope you are as excited as we are!
Here is some information that you need to know:
1.       We are working on the first draft of the race grid and should have something by Monday for everyone to review.
2.       We have a rough schedule of events for the weekend- that will be posted to the website tonight (Friday)
3.       We will mandatory Captain’s/Team Leaders meetings on Saturday at 8:15 and on Sunday at 8:30
4.       We will make boats available for practice on Thursday afternoon and on Friday for those that want to practice. Please let us know if you would like to set something up
5.       We have a location for a paddler’s party on Saturday night. The location is the Offshore Tavern and it is just a few minutes from the race site. No charge to attend and they will have specials for the paddlers on Saturday evening after racing. It’s a local favorite and they are giving us the entire patio! Their information is on the website. Check it out.
6.        Safety Issues:
you must wear a life vest during the races which will be provided (If you have your own that is acceptable but please be aware that the small inflatable ones are not acceptable)
We will have emergency medical staff on site
7.       We would like to know if there is anyone attending that needs to log hours for their officials training. If so please let us know
8.       Weather forecasts are calling for Marine Layer and some chance of rain next weekend. We never know how that will go but please bring some light jackets and dress appropriately just in case.

BCS & Cancer Survivor Ceremony

We are hoping to promote the Survivors effort towards Dragonboat racing, to that end we are going to facilitate an exhibition “race “ whereby we will combine paddlers from across all clubs and mix them together into two Survivor crews and “race” them together on the course finishing with a Memorial Flower Ceremony. The TEAM SURVIVOR San Diego women will be volunteering at the Hospitality/Concierge tent as Welcomers. They hope to educate visitors about the benefits of paddling dragonboats and will be available to answer questions regarding the event and other SD based inquiries. If you have any survivors and/or BCS members planning on making the trip to SD this month- for any reason, or with an open competing team, please be sure to have them contact Cheance Adair prior to arrival so we can get a head count. We are planning this paddle/ceremony for Saturday at the noon-ish hour.

Masters Division Deleted...

Due to lack of teams entering the Master Mixed, we have eliminated this division from the San Diego Dragon boat race this year. This will allow more racing time on the water for the other divisions!
